Singapore - WAM 2019 Carnival

Singapore - WAM 2019 Carnival

In the first nationwide dementia survey carried out in April this year by the Singapore Management University (“SMU”) and ADA it was revealed that more than half of the general public rated themselves low in dementia knowledge and felt uncomfortable interacting with persons with dementia, with almost 44% feeling frustrated with not knowing how to help people with dementia.

It was, however, encouraging to note that nearly 8 in 10 of all respondents wanted to do more to improve the lives of persons with dementia. In fact, 70% felt that persons with dementia could still enjoy life and that more could be done to improve their quality of life. The WAM Carnival strives to do just that and will focus not on their deficits, but on what persons with dementia can still do with their remaining abilities. It’s important to recognise that persons living with dementia can still lead purposeful and meaningful lives.

This year’s event theme is #DespiteDementia and hopes to highlight that the disease does not define the person living with dementia. Persons with dementia are more than their label and that they should not be held back by dementia and by the stigma associated with it.

At the carnival, there will be activities and programmes for the entire family which will include:

·         Game booths where you can win prizes and freebies

·         Activity booths – Face painting, balloon sculpting, photo booth, etc

·         Food & Drink kiosks run by our very own ADA Café and manned by persons with dementia

·         Booths offering dementia related products and services

·         Giant brain balloon for you to find out more about your brain and take fun selfies

·         Interactive Playback Theatre

·         Screening of award winning “Still Alice” movie (or similar) followed by panel discussion with Kate Swaffer and local persons with dementia
