Switzerland - Living library «Let’s talk about dementia»

We organised a living library on the topic of dementia. By providing a framework for conversation about issues on dementia we helped spreading knowledge and overcoming prejudices. Around 30 people took part in the discussions. Visitors were able to borrow one of the interesting "living" books and ask questions about their experiences in dealing with dementia. One “book” talked about his experience as a music therapist working together with people with dementia. Another book gave an insight into everyday nursing care in the field of dementia. Intensive and stimulating conversations were held.

Czech Republic - Memory Week

  • Prague and other cities Czech Republic (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

During September, the Czech Alzheimer Society (CAS) and their contact points are organising different events, especially from 17th to 23rd of September, which is marked as a Memory Week.

An information campaign is held by 25 contact points (mostly residential social care providers) as well as “Mobile Counselling Centres” in 4 shopping malls, where dementia professionals provide free consultancy (memory problems, early diagnosis, post diagnosis support, information for carers, etc.).

Lucie Hajkova, consultant, social worker of CAS: “Mobile Counselling Centres are a great opportunity for people, who may not come to our contact points for advice, due to stigma or shame. These people (and of course others) can receive informational brochures, advice or support directly or we can ask them to come to our place and talk about their needs.”

In more than 40 places around the Czech Republic, free memory testing will be provided.

After the Memory Week, mostly focused on the general public, CAS will continue with the Conference Prague Gerontology Days, held from 25th to 26th of September.

A 10 Warning Signs infographic has also been released this September, translated from the original English version.

Finland - Memory Week "Take Memory-Friendly Actions"

The theme of Memory Week 2018 is “Take Memory-Friendly Actions”. They are rewarded by local associations all over the country. In Finland the Memory Week is traditionally organised around World’s Alzheimer Day (week 38 in September). The aim of National Memory Programme 2012–2020 is to create a memory-friendly Finland.

The Alzheimer Society of Finland is launching Muistikummit during Memory Week.

Muistikummit is a Finnish version of Dementia Friends. It simply means finding out more about memory-related diseases and how these diseases affect a person. The information sessions are organised by volunteers of local associations across Finland. After sessions everyone can turn the knowledge into memory-friendly actions.

Every action counts, no matter how small.  United, we can transform the way of thinking and acting. The aim of Alzheimer Society of Finland is to build a memory-friendly society step by step. Everyone with memory-related disease feels part of, not apart from, of that society.

To find out more please go to: https://www.muistikummit.fi
